The Realm of Arwynd

By now you know that Birch and I both love to roleplay. We’ve covered a couple of InWorldz roleplay regions before and for this post, I’ve been taking a closer look at The Realm of Arwynd, a mediaeval-fantasy roleplay realm.

It consists of several kingdoms for different races – the human realm, the elf kingdom, the underdark which is where the drow dwell, and a fae kingdom. Each realm is incredibly beautiful and built with an amazing eye for detail.

I met Arwynd’s owner and creator Rathmeous Dagger at the tavern and talked with him about his realm.

[picture: “Borrowed” from his Facebook profile. Calm down, ladies, he’s taken!]

Rathmeous Dagger: Please.. have a seat.
Leanna Caerndow: Thank you.
Rathmeous Dagger: I thought a tavern would be ideal to talk about RP…
Leanna Caerndow sits down, mouth watering as she eyes the food and drink on the table in front of her.
Leanna Caerndow: It’s perfect!
Leanna Caerndow: Thank you so much for taking the time
Rathmeous Dagger: Happy to do it. I’m honoured to be asked.
Rathmeous Dagger: Do you happen to speak Welsh?
Leanna Caerndow: Not really, why?
Rathmeous Dagger: Been dying to know what they are saying…
Leanna Caerndow: LMAO
Rathmeous Dagger: It’s ok.. One day someone will come along that does.
Leanna Caerndow grins

Rathmeous Dagger: Ok.. before we start
Leanna Caerndow: Yes?
Rathmeous Dagger: I give you permission to correct any typos I may make.
Leanna Caerndow: If I find any, I’ll fix them
Rathmeous Dagger: πŸ™‚ cool. Thank you.
[For what it’s worth, I made more typos.]

Leanna Caerndow: I know a bit about Arwynd’s history, from your facebook posts mostly, but…if I didn’t, how would you introduce Arwynd to a new player?

Rathmeous Dagger: Hmm.. Ok.. The best way I can introduce Arwynd.. Simply put.. Plug and play.
Rathmeous Dagger: I’ve designed Arwynd to be simple and easy for anyone to participate
Rathmeous Dagger: Pick a race.. pick a class, follow the simple rules that govern the sim and class they choose and have fun with it.

Leanna Caerndow: That sounds great! Uncomplicated and fun, I like that.

Rathmeous Dagger: Yes… I’ve been around the RP scene a very long time. Gone are the days of sitting around a table with friends playing Dungeons and Dragons. Virtual reality has changed all that.

Leanna Caerndow: I have never played that but heard a lot about it. So this RP realm is not based on D&D?
Rathmeous Dagger: Yes and no. Arwynd is the creation of my RL [real life] wife and I. We created Arwynd in SL in 2007. It remained around until late 2010 when we reached burn out and sold it. The races and classes found in Arwynd are based loosely on Dungeons and Dragon rules.
Leanna Caerndow: Ahhh okay! Well, that’s good to know.
Rathmeous Dagger: Its also important to know that The world of Arwynd is not on earth.
Leanna Caerndow perks, “Oh that is interesting!”

Leanna Caerndow: What made you come to IW?
Rathmeous Dagger: Oh.. that’s easy. Linden Labs. They went back on their word, changed their TOS and laid claim to my creations. It was an easy decision. Yes, I miss my friends, but I refuse to support anything LL does.
Leanna Caerndow: Ouch. I’ve heard that too many times, sadly :/

Rathmeous Dagger: I’ll touch back on why Arwynd is not on earth. The reason was simple… I don’t want to limit Arwynd’s potential. I don’t want to have earth history get in the way of our fantasy world. Removing it from earth allows us to have endless possibilities .
Leanna Caerndow: I never thought about that but it doesn’t sound bad. So, Arwynd is not on earth, but you have “earthly” races for characters?
Rathmeous Dagger: Well.. who’s to say they are earthly? No one really knows where humans came from. There are many opinions on that. However… even though Arwynd is not on earth, that does not exclude anyone from an earth fantasy realm to visit. There is a magic mirror located in Arwynd that allows travel back and forth between worlds.
Rathmeous Dagger: This mirror is the catch-all way to intersim.
Leanna Caerndow: That’s a really good point! πŸ˜€ And I like the sound of that. It makes for really creative RP, I think.
Rathmeous Dagger: Thats what I’m hoping to build here. Something different.

Rathmeous Dagger: And what’s most important of all is that we are free form. And for those that don’t know what free form means…Is that nothing is scripted. Nothing is preordained.
Leanna Caerndow: That makes it easy for new people to find their place, I would think.

Rathmeous Dagger: I don’t know about you.. but most people like to discover the ending of a story after they read it. Knowing how something is going to end, unless it’s a biography, is not entertaining.
Leanna Caerndow: No, it’s not. I read A LOT and I know a few people who read the ending before they read the book and it drives me nuts. I don’t get it.

Rathmeous Dagger: Well.. their loss. What’s better about free form is [that] NOBODY knows the ending.. because it’s open ended. There are so many paths one can take in a story line they create. It’s really enjoyable to see.

Leanna Caerndow: So there is no realm-wide “plot” with a planned ending? I approve of this, lol.
Rathmeous Dagger nods.

Leanna Caerndow: Something else, I know you have a huge weapons shop selling (mainly) unity based weapons. Does meter combat play a big role in Arwynd?

Rathmeous Dagger: Not really. The meter is used not only in combat but helps keep things in check. For example, if someone chooses to be a rogue and decide they want to hide in the water… well.. they can’t stay under and not drown. The meter will keep things honest.

Leanna Caerndow: rofl! right
Rathmeous Dagger: However.. if combat is decided between players and they prefer to use the meter, they can. But it’s [the] players’ choice. They can also use dice.
Leanna Caerndow: Ohhh! I love that it’s up to the players.

Rathmeous Dagger: The reason I opted to allow dice is to allow anyone the opportunity to be whatever they want. Especially those with disabilities.
Leanna Caerndow nods, that is excellent πŸ™‚

Rathmeous Dagger: I know a sim that I will not mention that is solely based on combat and your skill with the combat systems decides if you can be a knight or warrior or not. How sad is that?

Leanna Caerndow: That is sad. They could run into an excellent roleplayer who would play the best knight ever but they let him or her walk because he or she is not good at *clickety-click*.

Rathmeous Dagger: The whole idea about virtual reality is to let your fantasies come true. Imagine being disabled and not able to manipulate a keyboard well enough.and told by some sim owner. “No.. you can’t be a knight because you suck at fighting.”
Leanna Caerndow: Very sad indeed. I think the *clickety* action type of roleplay suits people who don’t like to type? lol
Rathmeous Dagger: MANY come to VR grids to escape their reality.. Not have it be thrown in their face and kept from being something they want. That irks me to the core.
Leanna Caerndow: I completely understand that. It sounds a bit like…I’m not sure I have a polite expression, give me a second…
*** He crashed and I swear I had nothing to do with it! Really…***
Leanna Caerndow: Wb!
Rathmeous Dagger: Damn.. that was RUDE!
Leanna Caerndow: Hahaha!

[My perspective: I really enjoy meter fights, they’re FUN! But if a meter fight is used to decide the outcome of a major event, it doesn’t sit well with my personal idea of creative roleplay. And if you tell a player beforehand that they are required to lose the meter fight, then what is the point of using a meter at all? I like to compare meter fights to first person shooter games. It can be fun but it’s a bit dull and not exactly what I would call creative. But then again, there’s plenty of people who don’t want to be creative after a long day at work and that’s fine, too. It’s all about diversity, there is no “one size fits all” solution. And I love that in Arwynd I’m able to choose whether I want to roleplay a fight or use the meter. ]

For everyone who enjoys meter combat, Arwynd has a beautiful arena where you can practice and fight with like-minded people:

Leanna Caerndow: What I have gathered so far is that Arwynd is for people who genuinely enjoy creative RP.
Rathmeous Dagger: Absolutely. And have total say of their storyline.
Leanna Caerndow: That’s perfect.
Rathmeous Dagger: No application forms to fill out.. No pre-approval of races because they are clearly spelled out – what is and what isn’t allowed.
Rathmeous Dagger: The list is small of what isn’t.
Rathmeous Dagger: Also… very important…as I said when we started: Think of Arwynd as being plug and play
Leanna Caerndow: That is fantastic πŸ˜€
Rathmeous Dagger: Anyone can be whatever they want. No classes or meetings to attend. This includes magic.
Leanna Caerndow: Oh! So I can go about and wave a wand?
Leanna Caerndow grins.
Rathmeous Dagger: For beginners… I encourage them to start at level 1 but anyone can start out as a level 2 anything. There aren’t any guilds so ranking is based on participation.
Leanna Caerndow: Oh, that makes sense to me.

Rathmeous Dagger: And I let the realm leaders decide that as they would know best.
Rathmeous Dagger: The magic here is easy. We have our own Magic huds.

Leanna Caerndow: But you would step in if someone were way out of line? I mean, things happen (shit usually happens to me but that’s a different story).
Rathmeous Dagger: Oh yes… Arwynd has admins, and a sim manager if I’m not around for serious offenses. Thus far we have been lucky. Seems the other sims draw the trouble makers and leave us alone.

Rathmeous Dagger: I find that a tightly clenched fist only makes things worse.
Leanna Caerndow: It can, yes, I think so.
Rathmeous Dagger: Kindness and respect to everyone and their ideas is very important in Arwynd. If you can’t play nice with others.. don’t come to Arwynd.
Leanna Caerndow: it’s common sense.

arwynd blog 3 [picture: A glimpse into the fae valley. There’s tree homes for seelie fae and crystal caves with homes for unseelie fae. If you’re not familiar with the terms seelie and unseelie – opinions vary but in general seelie are the slightly lesser “evil”. ]

Leanna Caerndow: Are there OOC [Out Of Character] events?

Rathmeous Dagger: People ask me sometimes… about “what’s next” or “When is the next RP event” My response to them is. “Make one happen.” Same thing with OOC events. Anyone can plan one anytime. I have an OOC club in the market area, CLUB DAGGER. It’s open to members 24/7 and if you want a DJ added to the list, they just need to let me know and I’ll make it happen.

Leanna Caerndow: Ohhh! Wow. You definitely don’t rule with an iron fist, lol!
Rathmeous Dagger: No… there is no need for all that. I may have king as my title but its only for RP. No need to power trip. I know several places that the title they wear over their heads in IC… seem to be stuck in their heads in OOC as well.
Leanna Caerndow grins, “I’ve met my fair share of people like that.”

Rathmeous Dagger: I see myself as a host. I want people to come and enjoy themselves. Not alienate anyone.
Rathmeous Dagger: Possibly in the near future. I’m considering going to the 4 sim plan that InWorldz now offers.[ read about 2×2 regions here ] That would allow for sailing between realms.. and more ground usage vs. the skysims I’ve created.

Leanna Caerndow: Oh nice! πŸ˜€
Rathmeous Dagger: Will take a lot of creativity to get it done. I may wait until the fall when my RL will slow down.
Leanna Caerndow: And energy! I’ve been thinking of doing the same with my sim but I kind of cringe when I think of the work involved. And I have only one small sky place.
Rathmeous Dagger: Yeah.. lots of mental energy
Leanna Caerndow nods

Leanna Caerndow: Is there anything you want to say to the millions of readers our blog has? πŸ˜€
Rathmeous Dagger: Arwynd needs players wanting to have complete immersed fantasy experience without shackles or restraints. If that is what they are looking for, Arwynd is the place to be.
Leanna Caerndow: Awesome!! πŸ˜€ Thank you so much for taking the time!

Whether you’re interested in mediaeval-fantasy roleplay or not, you should definitely visit Arwynd. It’s a beautiful place and as mentioned, there are multiple levels to explore. When you first land in Arwynd, whether it’s at the OOC mall or at the central sim hub, make sure to grab a folder with information about the sim and its story. You get everything you need to play in Arwynd – hud, pouch to gather and craft items, and all relevant information. It’s super easy to just hop right in and play!

Another picture of the Underdark – even though I REALLY don’t like (well, okay, “hate” is more appropriate, to be completely honest) spiders, that place is beautiful!

And don’t forget to check out the Arwynd mall for mediaeval and fantasy clothes, avatar accessories, furniture, and more. If you’re looking for weapons for your roleplay that work with the unity system – THE InWorldz combat and roleplay system – you have to check out Rathmiticus Arms. The weapons are gorgeous!
